Contract Bridge (Quarterfinals)
The day started out optimistically for the Contract Bridge Team, Hall 6 won their first game against Hall 11 with a decent Victory Point difference of 17 – 13. The team then proceeded on to beat Hall 2 in our second game 18 -12, where Fund and Zi Kai defended well.
At that point of time, we looked to be quite comfortably entering the Quarterfinals. However, we were quite apprehensive about meeting Hall 15 at Quarters, as they were a very strong team.
In an unexpected turn of events, we lost our last game against Hall 5, 11 – 19. This resulted in a three-way tie between Hall 6, 11 & 12 for our group. All with 46 points each, Hall 6 and 12 had two wins and one loss, while Hall 11 only had one win, but their IMP (another counting system) was considerably higher. There sparked a dispute amongst the three Halls regarding the final score count and the deciding factor for whom to qualify for Quarters. Stifen shared that he was anxious that we get first of our group because that meant we would not have to meet Hall 15 at Quarters, hence increasing our chances to get into Semis.
The Chief Umpire first looked at the VP but it was a draw amongst all 3 halls, then it was a decision to look at the IMP or at Table Wins, either way Hall 6 has qualified for Quarters. If we looked at the IMP, we would be second, and have to play Hall 15. However, if we looked at Table Wins, we would be first of our group followed by Hall 2 - which was the ideal situation. Upon checking the rules, it was stated that the IMP would be the deciding facto. Due to the uniqueness the three-way tie situation, the convening Hall called for an immediate Joint Hall Recreation Meeting to discuss the issue, while our players waited by anxiously.
The majority vote was in Hall 11’s favor to consider the IMP instead of the Wins, hence putting Hall 11 top of our table and us second. With this, our four players walked into the arena, bracing themselves to face Hall 15 – last year’s runner-ups. Our players fought valiantly and put in their best effort, unfortunately, Hall 15 were respectable opponents, and we lost to them. Good work to the team for their hard work, and we will DEFINITELY come back stronger next year.
