IHG - Othello(27/Jan/11)
Pictures can be view at : Click Here
Being the defending champion this year, the pressure was on us to deliver an equally good or even better result. Preparations for the Hall Olympiads for Othello started immediately after the exams. We sparred with each other and even played online to get used to the different playing styles of different players on the internet. The preparations eventually led to a round robin selection match to decide who enters the team and climaxed with a super senior coming back to play a few friendlies with us. In the end, Eddie, Henny, Wei Lun, Liying, Jin Tian, Vincent and me, myself was selected to represent the hall.
Our first day against Halls 4 and 2 went well. On the second day, we faced stronger teams like Hall 9, 7 and 1. Though we lost to Hall 9, we still managed to score victories against Halls 7 and 1. The third day featured weaker opponents so freshies were fielded to let them gain experience. Having lost only one preliminary match, we entered the semi-finals.
We faced Hall 10 in the semi-finals. The Hall 6 team managed to win 4-1 over them. Suddenly, the prospect of adding a companion to the Scrabble Championship Medal which Hall 6 won earlier became real and the team was excited for it. But alas, all was not to be. Though we fought valiantly, we eventually lost to Hall 3 to pick up the runners up medal.
Personally, I initially had some doubts about the team getting into the semi-final without our two super seniors that graduated last year. However, I am glad and proud that the team has proven me wrong. I am also very honored for the seniors to have faith in me and fielded me in many matches.
Renewal has also been an issue with many teams in many halls and this problem is expected to be brought out again as more of Hall 6’s Othello players graduate this year. However, I would like to encourage the team that we can turn this problem into our advantage. As long as we practice hard and train smart, plus a little bit of luck of getting some good Othello players among the freshies of 2011/12 batch and beyond, there will be this chance that THE NEW BLOOD can surpass the previous batches and bring Hall 6 Othello to greater heights.
Finally, on behalf of the Othello team, I would like to thank our Recreation Directors Sky and Ziyi for putting so much thrust and encouragement on us. Samuel, Patrick, Jia Yi and Ping Lon for coming down for most of the matches and the dozens of supporters who rushed down to cheer on us when news reached that we enter the finals. Your presence did calm my nerves down in the finals. To the Othello seniors, thank you for spending the time tutoring the juniors (especially Prof 29 though this is zero AUs and he has to deal with his FYP at the same time =p) and making the Hall 6 Othello family a fun place to be. Oh yah, and thanks for the bananas!
*No offense to those names not mentioned as I’m not going to turn this write-up into another edition of Star Awards or Oscars. =p
