After the unfortunate defeat in the final game last year, the Hall 6 Scrabble team was upset but unequivocally determined to get our hands back on the gold medal in the following year. Yet, the journey this year wasn't all smooth-sailing, especially with a fairly young team and the fact that many other halls were rising to the occasion. It was going to be a tough fight; and it was.

We were all afraid to be just a step away from victory again. The seniors had worked hard over this one year for a triumph that is to be determined by nine games in just over two days. Inspired by these seniors, the juniors strived to better themselves as the games were nearing. We gained confidence. But we knew that if anything is going to stop us from achieving our victory, it would be complacency.

To honour our worthy opponents (although admittedly I want to punch someone's face), we actually felt intimidated. It was unnerving, particularly the games against Hall 15, Hall 16 (which has a National Master in the team) and the ever-friendly Hall 3. They were all almost equally commendable and we only won the games against them by 3:2.

We stumbled along the way but ultimately, after a tough fight, the victory was ours to be. This Gold medal means a lot to us: it represents our hard work, it represents our team spirit (including the super-seniors and PSC who brilliantly wore her Hall 6 tee at home as a form of spiritual support HAHA), it represents the realization of our goal; and most importantly, it represents how we got back even stronger after the previous defeat.

I want to take this chance to reach out to the juniors: find a balance between individual skills and team work; have faith in your team mates but don't be complacent. I am saying this from experience because I, regrettably, brought about last year's failure (and almost for the game two years ago) due to over-confidence in my team mates and hence complacency. I am sure the IH Scrabble games were an eye-opener and an inspiration for all of you to do even better next year.

We will come back even stronger next year and be more than just Legendary, Disgusting and God-like.

Hall 6, OVIA!

  1. Correction: I not only wore my Hall Tee at home. I was shamelessly parading in my Hall Tee at the market, in Sengkang Interchange and my son's school. :p
